This book has elements of mystery and science fiction. These mysteries continue as she receives subsequent notes. In the first note, the writer states “I am coming to save your friend’s life, and my own.” Obviously, Miranda and her mother are startled by the note, and things that are written in the notes actually do take place. Miranda mysteriously begins receiving anonymous notes about things that are to happen in the future. She meets new friends, but doesn’t really have the deep connection with others that she had with Sal. She’s very conflicted and deeply affected by the loss of Sal’s friendship. Her best friend Sal isn’t talking to her any more, and at first, she doesn’t understand why. Other prevalent parts of the story are Miranda’s relationships with her friends, and the tensions she must learn to navigate in her friendships. Miranda and her mother have a good relationship, and Miranda also likes her mother’s boyfriend named Richard. Miranda’s mom struggles to make ends meet, and is preparing to be a contestant on “The $20,000 Pyramid” television game show. A sixth-grader named Miranda lives with her single mother in an apartment in New York City. This book by Rebecca Stead is a Newberry Award winner.
